Gasp: Religious Zealot Sarah Palin Wanted to Ban Books

Time.com gets in on the smear train

Editors published 9/3/2008 8:45:00 PM
Time article Mayor Palin: A Rough Record gets in on the smear gravy train. Injecting their religion-phobia into the mix:
as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

"We like to call this the Bible Belt of Alaska," says Cheryl Metiva, head of the local chamber of commerce. Churches proliferate in Wasilla today, and among the largest and most influential is the Wasilla Bible Church, where the Palins worship. "We like to call this the Bible Belt of Alaska," says Cheryl Metiva, head of the local chamber of commerce. They are trying to paint her as some kind of right-wing wacko religious zealot.

Interesting to note that this supposed factual account is simply hearsay reiterated by a former political rival, Wasilla mayor John Stein. How does he know what Palin asked the librarian? How does he know the librarian was aghast? Since when can one person tell you how another person feels or thinks about something. And if somebody obviously could have an agenda behind their statement, shouldn't you try pretty hard to find out both sides of the story before "reporting" it?
When are "journalists" going to begin researching their stories instead of just typing up everything they run across as if it is gospel truth? Never. It's the nature of the beast.
The librarian "couldn't be reached for comment" - I know first hand how long and hard journalists try to reach people for a comment. They hang up after the first ring, or wait to call until after office hours. Gives them an easy out.

Sorry but the facts are plain. Palin sought to ban certain material she and a small cadre of local zealots objected to. Sorry. Gov. Palin remains an extremist and religious zealot who is completely out of touch with mainstream America.

I believe Sean Hannity is correct when he says that this is the year that journalism died. They are trying to make Bible Belt sound like "dirty words" - but for those who grew up in the Bible Belt (deep south), having a lot of churches in town sounds like a good thing - not a bad thing. And I personally want a President and Vice President who worship. There's power in prayer! Let's all pray for our Country First then pray that Governor Palin and Senator McCain take the reigns of the US. (While we are at it, a prayer for a Republican Senate and House wouldn't hurt!!)

That would be the day Fox News went on the air.
Keep prayin' for rain.

Arby, you are free to PROVE that assertion with EVIDENCE. But so far, heresay from someone who got beat by Palin and is now seeking to even the score is hardly proof.

Didn't she also fire the librarian and only re-hire her after public outrage? It's ok if she is a religious zealot, just be honest.

Is it really being a religious zealot or was she excersing her freedom of speech. You can't be a liberal or democrat and stand behind what it really means then hate bash Sara for the demonstrating her right. I'm glad she did, maybe a little more conservatism would do our children better.

Where's your proof? Hearsay is not evidence in any court in the land.

As a citizen, I have the right to go to my public or school libraries (both paid for and supported by my tax dollars, by the way) and object to their making available to my children, books containing inappropriate, vile, pornographic or otherwise unacceptable language or images. Since when does a mayor cease being a citizen?

Er, so you are saying the allegations are true? What kind of "fight the smear" is just admitting the allegation is true?
Seems like this is just an opportunistic site to make ad dollars.

The allegations are ridiculous and over the top even for the MSM. This site is solely supported by ads - don't click the ads if you don't like. Thanks.

Perhaps they should include a link to the actual video interview with the librarian (which has been all over the news and verifies this story), and not conveninently quote an ariticle where the librarian was unavailable.

You guys don't get it. The librarian was a public employee and this was a public library. We all pay taxes to support public instititution such as the library system. If you and I disagree on whether or not a book should be on the shelf, who gets to be the arbiter? The reason we have the Constitution and the First Ammendment is to safeguard against precisely what Sarah Palin attempted to do. By attempted to ban books and fire the librarian she declared her rights were more important than anyone else. Thank goodness the community rallied around the librarian and forced Palin to rescind the termination. Censorship and book banning has no place in a democracy. If she had been sucessful think of the precident that would have been set. Would every incoming mayor have the right to decide what was on the library shelf based on their preferences? If so, can you guarantee that every incoming mayor will agree with YOUR definition of what is offensive? The Constitution is there to protect all of us, because whether you want to believe it or not, your side could be the losing side in an election. Think about it.

You know nothing of the rules of evidence. The hearsay rule has many exceptions.

re: 7 Heather H
Heather is the echo in your head so loud that you can't hear yourself? You talk about free speech yet seek to deny it to everyone who disagrees with you. BOOK BANNING is not the way to guarantee free speech, it is the direct road to destroying freedom of speech. If you don't like a book, you are free to NOT READ IT, and exercise parental control to keep your children from reading it. But, since you are NOT MY PARENT, you have NO RIGHT to IMPOSE your stilted viws on me

Why is everyone who is not a blue-blood republican viewed as an athiest, communist, baby killing idiot? Are you that afraid to think for yourselves and process information. By the way, alot of the the soldiers being served up as cannon fodder are democrats. Not being a republican does not make me wrong!
